Diatom | Singer / Musician
I was born in Osaka, Japan and grew up in both Japan and the U.S. I am currently based in Utah. I am a singer/musician. I have a solo project called Diatom. Diatom's sound is sort of an experimental hybrid of electronic, jazz, and sample-based hip hop. I am also an avid jazz singer, and am currently working on my first jazz album.
I am inspired by art that furthers revolution and change, whether that be on an individual, community, or world wide scale. I am also inspired by the strength and courage of artists who aren't afraid to share stories and to spit truths, even and especially when the truth does not serve the status quo. Art throughout history has oftentimes been the only way for oppressed individuals to express themselves, and it is those stories I am inspired and humbled by. I love doing what I do because there is nothing that makes me happier than when I am creating. My advice to people who want to pursue their passion in art or music is simple: "The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is-it's to imagine what is possible." - (bell hooks, Outlaw Culture) Never stop imagining what is possible, and listen carefully to the possibilities imagined by those who are suffering the most. That's where the best art is!
